Saint Tanwg Ascetic

Reposed 6 century Remembered October 10

St Tanwg founded a small church at Llandanwg close to the sea near Harlech in Gwynnedd. He was the brother of Saints Trillo, Tegai and Twrog and companion of St Cadfan. Two inscribed stones from the 5C – before St Tanwg arrived, suggest it was a very early site perhaps because its lovely beach gave easy access to land. One of them, an eight foot pillar stone may have come from Ireland. The church has had to be rescued from the sands and though now restored is so close to the sea that in stormy weather the churchyard is flooded.
