Saint Carantoc and Cubert Ascetic

Reposed 6 century No memorial date known

Sts Cubert and Carantoc were missionaries from Wales in the area just south of Newquay. St Carantoc is said to have moved on to Brittany while Cubert returned to his monastery in Wales. There is a very attractive holy well dedicated to him to the west of the village in the sand dunes.

There is another well in a tidal cave on the seashore famous for its natural coloured limestone deposits. Which of the two wells gave its name to ‘Holywell Bay’ is disputed; but as the second cell is not ‘holy’ it is more likely to be the first.
