Saint Urith or Iwerydd or Hieritha Martyr

Reposed 8 century Remembered July 8

This saint lived at Chittlehampton off Exmoor in Exeter; she is also called St Iwerydd in Welsh and Hieritha in Latin. She was decapitated either by the scythes of local jealous women, (or Saxons, or Vikings, no one seems to know.) Her tomb lies to the side of the main altar where her shrine was. Chittlehampton became a pilgrimage centre and as a result the church there was able to build the highest tower in Devon.
