Saint Cronan Abbot

Reposed 640 Remembered April 28

St Cronan had try to settle in a very wild place far from anyone but gave it up as a bad job and founded the monastery of Roscrea Co Tipperary. A disciple called Dimma transcribed a magnificent Gospel book which became known as the ‘Book of Dimma’.

He is not to be confused with St Cronan Mochua a contemporary. A fine 12C oratory hidden away on the Burren at Templecronan is dedicated to St Cronan but to which one of the two saints is unclear. There are two tomb shrines adjacent to the church, one of them complete. As a result many pilgrims were drawn here. There is also a holy well.
