Saint Dermot or Diarmaid Abbot

Reposed 6 century Remembered January 10

St Dermot (Diarmaid) founded a monastery on the island of Inchcleraun in the middle of Lough Ree Co Longford. This great and beautiful Lough gives a wonderful impression of a water ‘highway’. The island itself, far from human activity, is hugely quiet and for this reason one does not hear much about it. But Dermot inspired many and he was the teacher of St. Ciaran of Clonmacnoise. There is an early small stone church which was probably his tomb-shrine. There are five other churches on the island.
