Saint Fachtna or Fachanan Abbot

Reposed 6 century Remembered December 20

Kilfenora lies in the distinctive limestone landscape of the Burren in Co Clare. The plentiful supply of broken stone may have encouraged the building in stone some time before this came into fashion elsewhere. It is home to many churches, monasteries and holy wells. There are also several penitential stations made for pilgrims.

St Fachtna (Fachanan) founded a monastery at Kilfenora Co Clare. He was probably the first bishop. The church contains several fine High Crosses The impressive ‘Doorty’ Cross shows Christ as the great Shepherd and Bishop of the Church; under him there is both a bishop (with a crozier) and an abbot (with a ‘Tau’ cross) dispensing the way of salvation.
