St Ita (Deidre) became a nun at Killeedy (’Ita’s cell’) Co Limerick and eventually the head of a community for women. The nuns ran a school for young boys. They were taught ‘faith in God with purity of heart, simplicity of life with the practice of faith, generosity with love’. What more teaching do we need? She was also ’foster-mother to several of them, not least St Brendan the Navigator. She suffered and died of cancer. Some say she was buried at Killeedy, others show a grave at Tubrid near Ardfert where St Erc baptised St Brendan.
