Saint Macarten Bishop

St Macarten was a convert who became a colleague of St Patrick and is said to have been made first bishop of Clogher Co Tyrone. A reliquary called the ’Great Shrine of Saint MacCairthinn’ was made for his relics and for a relic of the True Cross. It is now in the National Museum. There are 2 early crosses in the churchyard.
