Saint Mel Bishop

Reposed 487 Remembered February 6

St Mel may have come with St Patrick from Britain and was possibly a relative of his. He evangelised in the area of Co Longford and founded a church at Ardagh about 454. He gave the nun’s veil of St Bridget.

He may be buried within the walls of the church which was originally made of wattle and daub and which was replaced by a small stone church.
