Saint Molua or Mo Lua Abbot

Reposed 609 Remembered August 4

St Molua (Mo Lua) founded a monastery on Friar’s island in Lough Derg Co Clare; the ruins of it were moved to Killaloe (‘church of Lua’) and rebuilt when an electric scheme was introduced in the Shannon. This church is probably his ‘house’. St Flannan (d 639) followed him as abbot. His cathedral in Killaloe has a High Cross inside it; an intact nave of a 12C church lies next to the cathedral. Also in Killaloe is a holy well in the garden of the bank opposite the cathedral.
