Saint Seanach Abbot

Reposed 6 century Remembered August 15

St Seanach was the brother of St Senan. He founded a monastery on one of the Maharee islands, north of the Dingle peninsula, in Co Kerry called Illauntannig, or St Seananach’s Island. Here is yet another island with complete monastery with cashel, beehive huts, oratories, cross and graveyard and even souterrains (Underground passages). Like Inishmurray, Scattery, Illauntannig and Church Island Lough Currane in Co Kerry, the centuries pass away before our eyes. The owner runs boats out to the island every week. If you fancy solitude there is one house on the island available to rent for a week – but plan ahead it is booked up for a long time ahead. I have been told that the island has a little micro climate of good weather. The church at Kilshannig on the tip of the mainland belonged to the monastery which kept the island supplied.
