Saint Finan Abbot

Reposed 661 Remembered February 17

St Finan was an Irishman who came to Scotland via Iona and built his cell on St Finan’s Isle on Loch Shiel, using it as his base for evangelism. It continued to be used for this purpose by later Columban missionaries. Within in the walls of a later chapel is an impressive altar and on it a 10C bell.

St Finan has been linked with other St Finan’s. First there is the St Finan from Lough Currane in Co Kerry. More likely is the St Finan who was made bishop of Lindisfarne after St Aidan.
