St Serf worked in the area of western Fife. He had a cave at Dysart in Kirkcaldy now in the property of the Carmelites. He was connected to Culross and Dunning and he, or perhaps someone else called Serf, founded a monastery on an island in Loch Leven. It is said he was also connected with St Mungo. It is now impossible for us to evaluate these connections.
There is a rare and important high cross in St Serf’s Church at Dunning in Strathearn, Perth and Kinross. It was erected in honour of King Constantine 1. The imagery of the cross takes sacred kingship as God given in the manner of King David in the Old Testament and in the manner of continental kingship of the time.
