St Baldred was a Northumbrian hermit who, it is thought, founded the monastery at Tyninghame which at that time was in the Northumbian kingdom. It is likely however that he originated from Ireland. He used this as a basis for evangelism among the East Lothians. He used to retire to the solitude of the Bass Rock where he had a hermitage and chapel. He also had a cave by the mainland at Seacliff.
