Saint Hieu Abbess

St Hieu was chosen by St Aidan to start the first Northumbrian monastery of Tadcaster about 640. It was a double monastery for men and women and the first known instance of a ruling abbess.

After nine years St Hieu was followed in office by St Hilda.
