St John was a monk of Whitby under St Hilda but became bishop of Hexham and then of York. He ordained St Bede as deacon and priest. He was responsible for founding the monastery at Whitby and eventually retired and died there. He was canonised in 1037. Many miracles are ascribed to him. His relics lie under the floor of the nave. He has a holy well at Harpham where he was born.
