Saint Herbert Ascetic

Reposed 687 Remembered March 20

St Herbert lived on St Herbert’s island in Derwentwater, perhaps not all the year round and probably not without the help of a gofer to supply his minimal needs. The island is accessible by boat. The trees form an exceptionally high canopy which makes for pleasant walking under them. There is a small length of wall (covered in brambles) which might be what is left of a chapel built for pilgrims.

An Orthodox Community begun in 2003 is dedicated to St Bega, St Mungo and St Hermit
