St Betti was one of four priests to be sent in 653 by King Oswiu of Northumbria to accompany his daughter to be married to King Paeda of the Mercians. The other three were Cedd, Adda and Diuma It is said the king was baptised at Sandbach in Cheshire. Adda was made bishop of the Mercians with his base at Repton. The lid of his tomb can be seen in Wirskworth church. On it there is a carving of a crucified lamb, a depiction which was forbidden in the council of Constantinople in 692 lest it be though it really was a lamb who was crucified on the Cross.
