St Brendan of Birr was a disciple of St Finnian of Clonard at the height of its fame. He was counted as one of the twelve apostles of Ireland and was the friend of his namesake St Brendan the Navigator. He founded the monastery at Birr Co Offaly about 540. He was known for his gift of prophecy.
