Saint Osthryth Martyr

St Osthryth was a Mercian Queen martyred by Mercian nobles in 697. Her husband St Aethelred, king of Mercia became a monk and abbot of Bardney (716).

There were cults of both at Bardney before the invasion of the Danes.

St Osthryth had the relics of St Oswald brought to Bardney and persuaded St Oswald’s wife to become a nun.
