St Aldhelm was trained by an Irish monk called Maeldub and also a disciple of St Theodore of Tarsus. He was a monk under Maeldub for 14 years and, on his death in 675, was appointed abbot . He founded two other communities at Frome and Bradford-upon-Avon. He was made Bishop of Sherborne about 705. After his death he was venerated as a saint and miracles were recorded at his tomb.
