Saint Deusdedit Bishop

Reposed 664 Remembered July 14

Deusdedit was from Wessex, and was the first Anglo-Saxon to be made Archbishop of Canterbury. His name means ‘God has given’. He founded a monastery for women on the Isle of Thanet and helped with that of Peterborough in 657. On his death, probably of the plague in 664 he was considered a saint. His grave in St Augustine’s Abbey lies alongside those of Sts Lawrence, Mellitus and Justus but is not marked with his name. His shrine however lasted until the Reformation.
