Saint Dunstan Bishop

Reposed 988 Remembered May 19

St Dunstan was an abbot of Glastonbury, Bishop of Worcester, Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury. He did much to restore the monastic life in England. He was the most popular saint of the country for 200 years. He spent some time as a hermit at Glastonbury where he built a small cell against the old church of St Mary and eventually was made abbot – due to a miracle in saving the life of King Edmund I when imperilled on a cliff edge while out hunting.

After a time in exile St Dunstan was appointed to Worcester and then London. Under King Edgar he was virtually prime minister of the country and officiated at the coronation of King Edgar.
